West’s work has been game-changing for biologists, but then he made the even bolder move of exploring his work’s applicability. Overview

Samuel Romanelli (1775-1817), homme de lettres et aventurier juif italien, se rend au Maroc dans le dernier quart du XVIIIe siècle. Ayant perdu son sauf-conduit, il y est retenu pendant quatre ans (1787-1790) et met à profit son séjour forcé pour rédiger un journal en hébreu sur ses péripéties rocambolesques. Fin observateur, il décrit la société marocaine juive et arabe à travers le regard critique d'un Européen très imprégné de la littérature des Lumières.
Unique en son genre, son récit est une source inestimable d'informations historiques, sociales et ethnographiques sur le Maroc en cette fin de siècle. Il décrit les fêtes religieuses et familiales ainsi que les coutumes propres au judaïsme local, en livrant ses impressions sur la valeur artistique des danses et de la musique des autochtones. Il brosse un portrait des Juifs marocains, leurs attitudes, leurs superstitions, leur pratique des sciences occultes, leur façon de prier et d'étudier et de prononcer l'hébreu.
Il dépeint aussi leurs rapports avec l'environnement et la précarité de leur situation en tant que dhimmis au sein de la société musulmane. Celle-ci retient également son attention et il consacre aux mosquées, au culte musulman et à la vénération des saints, des descriptions détaillées. Par son style et son contenu le Périple en pays arabe est une oeuvre majeure qui connut de nombreuses éditions au cours du XIXe siècle et fut traduit en anglais et en italien au XXe.
La présente traduction, copieusement annotée et précédée d'une introduction socio-historique par Paul Fenton, est la première version intégrale en français.
